Boxing up a home

Packing Services in Watertown, NY

Watertown Movers packs up homes and offices around the Watertown area, either top to bottom or just the rooms you'd rather not face. Census figures show about one in five Watertown residents moved in the past year. Ask what cartons, paper and special boxes come with the job, how rooms get labeled, and whether unpacking at the new place can be added. Say which rooms you want done and your move date.

Decide how much help you want

People often treat this as everything or nothing, and that's the usual mistake. Packing help comes in four forms, and combining them is common:

The whole house.

Every room, closet and drawer gets done. Set aside what you'll need for the final night and the first morning, and the rest is boxed.

Selected rooms.

Just the rooms you dread. Most often that's the kitchen, followed by the garage, the china cabinet and the home office. The rest you pack yourself, on your own schedule.

Breakables only.

Glassware, china, crystal, mirrors, framed pictures, TVs, instruments and collections are wrapped by packers, while you take care of clothing, books and linens, which are the simple part anyway.

Unboxing.

The service hardly anyone books and nearly everyone later wishes they had. See below.

Prefer to pack it all yourself? Ask about buying the supplies on their own; the right box for each job does most of the work, and it's where improvised packing goes wrong.

Scheduling

Packing comes before the truck

Plan your week knowing this: a full pack is done ahead of the move, normally the day prior, or over two or three days for a big house. The truck then shows up to a home that's already in boxes. The move day itself is explained on the local moving and residential moving pages.

That reshapes your final days. Beds, the coffee maker, bathroom things and the pets' gear go last, or on the morning itself. Whatever you're still using stays out and gets its own box at the end. Sorting must be finished ahead of the packers, not alongside them, because packers box whatever they find, including a drawer of dead batteries and a closet of clothes you'd already meant to give away.

Name the rooms that need to be packed and give your move date.

Technique

Signs of a carefully packed box

Breakage in boxes is mostly down to technique, not chance. Here's how a well-packed carton differs:

Plates stand upright, side by side in rows

They're never laid in a pile. Stacked flat, the weight of every plate presses down on the center of the lowest one, which is where it breaks.

Plain packing paper only.

Newspaper ink rubs off onto dishes, glass and painted finishes, and takes weeks of washing to remove.

Boxes packed right to the brim, with no hollow space inside.

A half-empty box caves in once something is set on top of it, while a full one bears the load. Tip a sealed box and you shouldn't hear anything shift.

Small cartons for heavy goods, large ones for light goods.

Load a big carton with books and the bottom seam gives way, usually halfway down a staircase in somebody's tired arms.

Base tape run along the seam and up each edge

Never one lone strip and crossed fingers.

Wine glasses standing in divided cells

Each glass gets its own slot, so none of them touch.

Shades boxed separately

Shades are nested together, never boxed with their bases or anything that could press on them. A dented shade is the most frequent avoidable breakage in a home move.

Mirror cartons that slide to fit art, glass and mirrors

Moved and stowed standing up.

Each box labeled with its destination room, an arrow for up, and a rough list of contents

Nothing gets taped shut before it's on the list.

Leave these out

What stays out of boxes

Things that burn, corrode, or are under pressure.

Gasoline and propane, paint thinner and solvents, spray cans, pool and lawn chemicals, ammunition and fireworks. None of these is safe in a box or a moving truck, so use them up, dispose of them properly, or transport them yourself.

Food that can spoil

That's why the fridge and pantry are cleared out, not packed.

Papers, prescriptions, jewelry, keys, laptops, hard drives and anything you can't replace

Keep these with you; packers are normally told to leave them be instead of deciding for themselves.

Pets and houseplants

Neither can ride safely in a box, and each needs its own plan, normally your own car or a service that transports animals or plants for a living.

Items you'd prefer to keep private.

Flag it, keep it all in a single room, and close the door.

Mark the rooms you will pack yourself and the rest.

Unpacking: the step most people leave off

Paying for packing but not unpacking is one of the most common false savings in a move. Packing happens against a hard deadline; unpacking drags on for months, fitted around work, with boxes stacked in the hall all along.

An unpack empties boxes room by room, sets the contents on counters or straight into the cupboards you choose, and, most usefully, removes the packing waste. The heap of flattened boxes and crumpled paper a household move leaves behind is surprisingly hard to dispose of, so ask whether it can leave with the crew; that's worth more than most expect.

It scales the same way packing does: the entire house, or just enough to get the kitchen and bedrooms usable the first night.

Declutter first

Every item you own is about to be wrapped, boxed, carried and unwrapped by someone, even the things you meant to toss. Deciding what stays behind is the best-spent afternoon of the move, more so on a long-distance move, where weight drives the bill. Bulky castoffs can go to the City of Watertown Department of Public Works bulk pickup, which won't take clothing or bedding. Sort first; nobody reopens a taped box.

Cost

What drives the cost

The number of rooms, the share that's fragile, how many specialty containers the job calls for (dish packs, wardrobe boxes, mirror cartons, custom crates for art or stone), whether unpacking is added, and how much sorting is left when packers arrive.

One more point isn't about money. Who sealed a box can change who is responsible if its contents arrive broken, so ask before you split the rooms; it may settle where the china and art belong. For moves inside New York, the New York State Department of Transportation says a mover must answer a written damage claim within 30 days.

FAQ

Packing questions

Are boxes and supplies part of it?

Often they are: cartons, plain paper, tape and the specialty boxes a job needs. What's included differs from one company to the next, though, so ask about it when you book instead of assuming it's all part of the job.

Could I box a few rooms and leave the others?

That's the most popular setup. Say which rooms you'll handle and which you won't, and label yours plainly so nothing is boxed twice or skipped altogether.

Should I be home during packing?

Ideally someone is, at least when packers arrive and when they finish. Questions always come up, like what's staying, what rides in your car, and which closet is off limits, and they take seconds to answer in person but ages to fix later.

Where does the leftover cardboard go?

If you booked unpacking, ask whether the packing waste leaves with the crew. If not, plan ahead: a whole house of flat boxes is more than regular pickup handles, and the Jefferson County Recycling & Waste Management Department can advise on recycling it.

List the rooms you want packed and any you'll do yourself, the number of bedrooms, your move date, and whether you'd like unpacking at the new place. Moving an office instead of a home? commercial moving explains how the work is usually shared between staff and movers.
